Every January my neurospicy brain decides to hyperfocus on something, and this year has been even more intense than previous ones – the result being a 15,000 word original RPG campaign (maybe a series??) based in Atlantis, with the playable character types being the ones depicted in the game. There are 4 main plots, 4 sub plots, and boat load of side quests as well as things to do for and with the NPCs, of which there are 60. I may yet add more – and most likely will, I really want this world to be fleshed out and enjoyable for the players with plenty to sink their teeth into (haha, SINK – gettit? cause stuff sinks in water!)
Despite all this work on building a world and mechanics that function well, I’m not sure what the campaign will look like because it will be driven by the players and their character motivations. I need to hear why they’ve come to the city and what they want to achieve before I can start mapping out sessions. I imagine that most of the things I’ve written for it will never come into play, but that leaves more excellent material for other players (or the same players) to explore in the next campaign, and for several more after that one I hope.
Three people have officially selected their species which will be a Parrotfish, an Eel, and an Octopus, as per the rules players that can give me a scientific fact about their creature before the campaign starts will get an extra ability and two players brought me eating facts! The octo character can tear off a limb to eat it and regain HP and the Parrotfish can eat coral scenery for HP regeneration.
I’ve leaned heavily into the exploration and celebration of diversity, agency over self, and the dismantling of hetero-normativity, and so most characters have neutral or neo-pronouns and players are encouraged to explore their characters identities and stretch themselves a bit. Tbh I have no idea why anyone would recreate the patriarchy when there’s a whole universe of possibilities to enjoy.
I’m hoping to keep a log of updates and anecdotes, if you’d like to see more about the campaign before you commit to buying that pack then please check here regularly!
